Crown Land Manager
The Lightning Ridge Area Opal Reserve (LRAOR) is a delegated Crown Land Manager under the Crown Land Management Act 2016 (NSW). That delegation gives us the authority, and the responsibility, to manage Crown land across the Lightning Ridge opal fields on behalf of the community.
In practice, that means maintaining roads and access tracks, stewarding natural landscapes, supporting education and research, facilitating agricultural use of Crown land, and running environmental programs across the Reserve. Every dollar of revenue generated through the Reserve is reinvested locally, into infrastructure, community programs, and the long-term health of the land.
It's important to understand what LRAOR is not: we are not a regulator. Mining approvals, resources regulation and statutory compliance sit with Crown Lands NSW and the NSW Resources Regulator. Our role is on-ground management, doing the practical work that keeps the Reserve functioning for miners, residents, researchers, students and visitors alike.
