Land & Infrastructure Management
Keeping the opal fields connected, roads, access tracks, amenities and community facilities that miners, residents and visitors depend on every day.
On the ground
The infrastructure that keeps the opal fields running
For miners, residents and visitors to the Lightning Ridge opal fields, road access is not a convenience, it is a necessity. The network of roads and tracks across Crown land is the circulatory system of the opal fields, and maintaining it is one of LRAOR's most fundamental responsibilities as the delegated Crown Land Manager.
LRAOR manages access points, tracks and roads across the Reserve, working in partnership with Walgett Shire Council and Crown Lands NSW to ensure that the road network meets the needs of the community. This includes routine maintenance, grading and drainage works, the unglamorous but essential work that keeps tracks passable through the seasons.
The most significant infrastructure outcome in recent years has been the gazettal and upgrade of Grawin Front Road. This result came after years of sustained advocacy by LRAOR and the community, pushing for the road to be formally recognised and brought up to a standard that reflects how critical it is to access across that part of the opal fields. With the road now gazetted and upgraded by Walgett Shire Council, it is formally part of the public road network, a durable outcome that will benefit the community for decades to come.
Beyond roads, LRAOR manages a range of community infrastructure across the Reserve, amenities, access facilities, and assets that support the day-to-day functioning of mining and tourism on Crown land. This infrastructure is funded through revenue generated by the Reserve, which is reinvested locally rather than flowing back to consolidated government revenue.
LRAOR works collaboratively with Walgett Shire Council on infrastructure planning and delivery, recognising that many of the roads and facilities that traverse Crown land also connect to the broader Walgett Shire road network. This partnership approach avoids duplication, aligns investment priorities, and ensures that advocacy for infrastructure upgrades speaks with a single, coherent voice to state and local government.
If you spot a road or track issue on Crown land within the Reserve, a damaged culvert, an impassable section after rain, a safety hazard, we want to know about it. Use the Road & Track Maintenance Request Form to report issues directly to LRAOR, and we will assess and prioritise accordingly.
